Well that settles it. I will never be a party planner.

When I decide to plan a party I basically do three things.

  1. Prepare the edibles
  2. Buy the libations
  3. Invite the people.

That’s it. No mas. My failure to take extra measures in party preparation isn’t because I don’t care, but rather because it doesn’t occur to me. Plain and simple…I’m kind of a lame party host. So I was knocked backward by some of the way-awesome details, both big and small, that filled my dear friend Courtney’s bridal shower this weekend.

Cool details like chocolates wrapped in paper that matches the wedding colors and is dotted with the bride and groom’s initials.

And refreshing limeade beverages served with customized straws. And tissue paper pom-poms.

And finger foods so artfully prepared you question whether or not they’re real. (Lucky for me, they were.)

Basically, I need to step up my hosting game because the entire affair was pretty, peppy and posh.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned in my “old age” (33) it’s not to stress about the party planning stuff! So don’t worry if you don’t get into it like other women. I have two kids and the crazy-themey parties only get worse. I have learned that one good game or activity can take the place of all that other stuff. At my son’s latest party I had the kids provide words for a Mad Lib story I made up and my dad (who’s a pretty good artist) drew the story on a big sheet of paper as I picked words out of a hat. Imagine the giggles at the picture of Darth Vader walking his pet watermelon.
If you find you enjoy party planning, by all means go for it. But if it just feels like work and stress to you (as it does to me), take a deep breath and release yourself from the evil Pinterest spirits that are making you feel like you’re a “lame party host” if you don’t plan and design and craft your party down to the n’th detail. You seem to have a fun personality and I sincerely doubt your parties are lame in the least!
